It’s just like yesterday when the news reached the entire Diocese of Lagos West of the election of Rt Revd James Olusola Odedeji as the second Bishop of the Diocese on Wednesday January 9, 2013. The current of the jubilation cannot be overemphasised. He was consecrated on Sunday February 28, 2013 at the Cathedral of St Jude, Ebute-Meta, Lagos and then served as the Bishop Co-Adjuctor with the retired Bishop, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Awelewa Adebiyi until Sunday April 28, 2013 when he was enthroned as the second Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. The consecration day is a day to always remember as it tallies with the St Mathias Day.
Looking back the past one year has been God according to Bishop Odedeji and that He has been faithful in all ways especially to the Diocese of Lagos West. The Diocese has witnessed so many transformations ranging from spiritual rejuvenation to infrastructural development of churches. According to him in his interview with press when he was six months in office, he said ‘It has been challenging for the past six months. Many things have been done. We have visited about 328 Churches on familiarisation tour after our enthronement as the Bishop of Lagos West. A total of 1799 candidates had been confirmed, and that number had been added to our Diocese as full members. Some other Episcopal duties like laying of foundations of churches and vicarages and dedication of Churches were performed. I had attended vigils in some of our Archdeaconry headquarters. I have been privileged to visit other Dioceses to fellowship with my brother Bishops. It has been interesting and challenging. But I thank God for His grace’. There has also been restructuring in the Diocesan Administration. Preferment and installation of the Dean of the Cathedral, the Ven Abel Olu Ajibodu have also been performed by him.
A Service of Holy Eucharist was conducted to give thanks to God Almighty for His faithfulness. During the sermon the Rt Revd Babatunde Ogunbanwo, the Bishop of Ijebu South West said the election of the Bishop Odedeji was a respond to the faithfulness of his late father of the Bishop of Lagos West, the Late Ven Odedeji who only became an Archdeacon at the age of 68 years after so many years of hardwork and hardship in ministry. That God rewarded hard labour of the clergyman that his son was elevated to the position of a Bishop in the Church of God. He encouraged the Bishop to allow the Holy Spirit to guide him as he discharges his Episcopal duties. He charged him to pray more and study the Word of God more so that he could stand anywhere. It was a surprise to see a large turn out of clergy and laity to celebrate the faithfulness of God in the life of this wonderful man of God.
The one year consecration thanksgiving was also marked with the dedication of an ultra modern building of Christ Anglican Church, Alapere, Lagos in Ogudu Archdeaconry of the Diocese. Bishop Odedeji thanked the Vicar of the Church, the Revd Michael Fasusi for the job well done. He encouraged the parishioner to use the house of God as the place of their spiritual development. The colourful service was also marked with the cutting of Anniversary cake provided by the Church.
