Synod News Update

The good people of the Diocese of Lagos West have been described as ready tools for rendering selfless service to the Diocese. This view was expressed by the Ven. Adegoke Agara, the Dean, Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos at the 3rd Session of the 6th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos West. His words: ‘We have people in the Diocese who are ever willing, to render selfless service, and that has been the mainstay of this Diocese, to the glory of God, such that it has remained an enviable Diocese in the whole of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion)’.

Being his first Synod since his installation as the Dean of the Cathedral this year, the Ven. Adegoke Agara, described the experience as being wonderful. He commended the leadership of the Diocesan, The Rt.Rev. Olusola Odedeji as exemplary. According to him, the Bishop has always been there to support the clergy physically and spiritually: ‘’In fact, at most of our spiritual programmes in the Cathedral, you see him there. He s actively involved as well. That is to tell you that we have the backing of God in heaven, and the backing of our father as well. He s a father to us. He s a mentor. He s a benefactor. God has used him for us in many ways, and is still using him now as evident in our working together in the Cathedral’’.

The Dean went further to describe the Diocesan s address as very timely, coming at a time like this when the world is in darkness. According to him, the address therefore enjoined all to arise and shine in the midst of that darkness. It is ‘’a challenge to all of us, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity, so that we can take up our stand with the Lord; instead of joining them, we should take a stand for the Lord without compromising and uphold the faith till the end’’.

Taking a cue from the theme of the synod, ‘Arise, Shine for your light has come’, The Ven. Adegoke Agara admonished all Nigerians to make up their minds to be light and shine, irrespective of where they find themselves in this country. On his part, he says he is committed to contributing his own quota to ensuring that the Diocese of Lagos West is taken to greater heights. He believes that ‘’the glory of the latter should surpass the former, with a view to being the solution rather than the problem’’.
